I wrote this poem many years ago about the kids making me pull my hair out . It is still highly relevant today (if not more!) with them both being autistic (I love them just as they are, but many days are hard!)

I’ve rewritten it slightly to reflect our growth as they were two and four back then – they’re now ten and twelve! I’m sure many parents can relate; we’re all in this together.

Today is another of those days, although no days are the same;
“Bruh, can you sit with me? I want to show you what I can do on this game!”.
And in the other room,
“But it’s not fair, I want to do the same!”.

They need me here, they need me there,
“I’m only one person, you’ll have to share!”
Let me make a coffee, maybe I’ll get to drink it hot;
Oh no, they’re fighting again, Mum to the rescue, as for the coffee, maybe not!

Lunchtime, on the dot! A few minutes of peace for me;
I send a message to my group chat,
“I’m pulling my hair out today,
Want some more kids? They’re on the way!”

A trip to the trampoline park? What a good idea,
“Come on kids, fresh socks, shoes on, let’s go!”
Tire them out some more for bedtime,
Then finally I can relax!

Oh what a day it’s been, they’ve driven me up the wall,
But these days won’t last much longer as they are no longer small.
So we read a book, have a hug,
And as they fall asleep, I softly stroke their hair.

Although the days of not wanting to pull my hair out are few and far between, I take more time on my hair now than I did then. The boys are old enough to occupy themselves in their bedrooms, so I do some self-care with my wavy hair routine once a week.

I can spend at least an hour on this on a good health day. It involves pre-washing, washing, conditioning, adding styling products, micro-plopping, and low-heat diffusing. My thick, low porosity hair can take what feels like forever to dry so I need to have the spoons available.

When I don’t have the spoons available but my hair is desperate for washing and it’s too cold to let it dry naturally, I skip the styling. I blow dry it straight instead as it takes less time and energy. The BLOW hairdryer from mdlondon is perfect for doing this as it’s lightweight so doesn’t make my arms ache from holding it.

The variable heat settings of the BLOW hairdryer means my hair doesn’t suffer from heat damage either. It has done in the past and it doesn’t look healthy! It dries quicker than diffusing too due to also having a variable speed setting. This is brilliant when you have a thick head of hair like mine!

My hair is something I take pride in nowadays and receive so many compliments on, however I wear it.
