I’m not going to lie; I’m not one to strictly limit tablet screen time with the boys. If I want a lie in, I’ll use it; if I need a break, I’ll use it; if they ask to watch whilst eating lunch, I’ll usually let them. (As long as we’re not sitting as a family – they’re not allowed their tablet then). They don’t watch television as much as they used to, and if they do then it’s usually a chill out time with us.

Since we’ve been living in the countryside they play outside a lot more than they used to. Before that, we had a communal concrete yard so it wasn’t that great for them. But now we have three different areas in which they can play, and we often go for walks along the river bank. There’s a certain place along there, that they pretend is a boat and they are fishermen!

Sudocrem’s Play More campaign

I think it’s really important that children get outside every day to play; even during the winter we still have their trampoline up, and they’re quite happy to go and bounce on that with their winter coats and hats on!

The people over at Sudocrem think that outside play is important too. Research they carried out found that children are spending around 45 hours a week in front of a screen, and only 4 hours playing outside. Earlier this year they launched the Play More campaign along with the help of Chris Packham, and carried out further research looking at the relationship between children and insects. Just one discovery was that a staggering 9 out of 10 children were unable to recognise a butterfly.
