The end of August seems to be the time when most people are running around, getting those last bits of uniform, ready for the little cherubs to return back to school. Until Jacob started primary school last year, I never realised actually how much was needed; trousers, t-shirts, jumpers, socks, shoes, coat, bags, PE kit (including shorts, tracksuit bottoms, t-shirt, jumper, trainers)… And with multiples of each, it can get expensive, right? He likes to get dirty (nothing wrong with that!) so I think we must have gone through at least 15 polo shirts through the school year; this year I decided to stock up with a pack every time I go to the supermarket!
I actually purchased his uniform from multiple stores last year to try and get the best value. Obviously style, colour, and fit is important too. This year, Debenhams asked me if I would like to purchase some school uniform for Jacob from their online store. I didn’t realise just how much choice there was! They currently have 25% off on their spectacular event too, so there’s even better value for money right there.
My thoughts
After much deliberating over items in the colour we needed for his uniform and what we already had, this is what I went for:
Regatta navy greenhill waterproof jacket
A good waterproof jacket is an essential, especially for the school playground. This particular jacket has a tuck away hood so it won’t get in the way when he’s running around on a cold day, when it’s not raining. Being Regatta, it’s great quality, thick material and does feel waterproof. The green lining inside makes it extra “cool for school”!
Hush Puppies black ‘Jezza’ leather shoes
A quality pair of shoes is definitely a must! Jacob is always running around and had many trips at school last year, but we still managed to stick with the same pair of shoes. These Hush Puppies shoes feel strong & tough, and the strengthened toe area looks funky as well as offering extra protection. As J’s feet are different sizes, the unique Hush Puppies fitting system is a bonus here.
Debenhams navy Shield+ trousers and Debenhams grey Teflon trousers
I mentioned in my opening paragraph that J likes to get dirty, so I always try to buy trousers that have some sort of stain repelling technology. Also, as a tall and skinny five year old, it’s difficult to find trousers that are the correct length and actually fit around the waist. So I went for these pairs of trousers as they have an adjustable elasticated waist too. They are way too loose without any adjustment, but once adjusted they fit great; they are also a perfect length for him. The quality feels durable, so hopefully the knees will last through his falls!
Debenhams white slim fit polo shirts and Debenhams white polo shirts
As J is skinny, I’ve found that polo shirts are often too baggy for him and crease up once he has his jumper on (he has jumpers with the school logo). So I was intrigued when I spotted the slim fit shirts. I bought some regular ones too, so I could compare the fit. To be honest, there isn’t much difference in fit between the two styles; though I think I do actually prefer the slim fit ones. Again, they feel great quality and they came out lovely after the pre “back to school” wash cycle.
Slim fit
The cost of most of the items I purchased is a little more than I would usually pay, but admittedly the quality does feel better, and I especially love the slim fit polo shirts.

Ahh he looks so smart! I never knew you could get slim fit polo shirts and I love the look of the rain jacket too!
Yeah I was surprised to see them, they fit him loads better!
