How To Get A Good Night's SleepImage Credit Pixabay.Com License CC0

Sleep is something that we all need. On average, we get around six to seven hours of sleep each night, but this is not really enough. Sleep makes us productive and much better at functioning. It sharpens our brain and recharges our bodies. Sleep performs some pretty important functions within our brains too and it allows them a chance to process all of the information that we continually bombard them with each day.

Without sleep, though we will not only be very tired and grouchy, we may have wider health issues. If you are repeatedly not getting enough sleep, then you are more likely to struggle with mental health problems such as depression and anxiety. You will be more prone to stress, and you may struggle to relax when you need to. You may have trouble concentrating which will affect your studies or work life as well as your overall self-confidence. There are physical health concerns too, tiredness will have a negative effect on your body and its organs and over time it can contribute to some serious conditions.

So, with sleep being so important to us, how do we ensure that we get the best night’s sleep possible?

Block Out The Light

You may be someone that needs a perfectly dark room to get to sleep. If that is the case, invest in some good quality blinds that are designed to keep the light out.

Switch Of Your Devices

Your smartphone may well be a source of light that stops you from sleeping too. Smartphone screens have blue light which will wake you up. Added to that, the overstimulation that your phone will provide can set your brain racing when you want it to rest. Ideally, you should resist using your smartphone during a couple of hours before you go to bed to allow your brain time to unwind. Then, either switch your phone off or put it in another room so it is not next to your bed.

Use Lavender To Relax You

Scatter some lavender oil on your pillow before you go to bed. This will provide you with a relaxing scent that will help you drift off naturally in no time.

Read Before Bed

Reading may be a much better activity than scrolling through your phone before going to sleep. Make time to read just before bed and you will find that it naturally relaxes you. You may find that you cannot read much before you end up dozing off, and you won’t remember the last thing that you read the next night so don’t read anything that you really want to get into.

Meditate

When you have a lot on your mind, this can stop you from falling asleep. To remove everything from your thoughts you could try meditating. By breathing in slowly, holding your breath, and then breathing out you will naturally become calmer. Listen to a guided meditation to help you, and don’t give up if you don’t get it on your first few attempts as it does take practice.
