As always I was looking forward to seeing what was inside the September Degustabox. There was a good mix of items; from sweet to savoury, food & drink, some brands I’d heard of and some I’d not. I don’t think there was anything in this one that I didn’t like, and the boys even enjoyed more of it than usual too.
So what was inside the September Degustabox?
Latin American Kitchen by Santa Maria (Peruvian Garlic & Tomato Sauce, Arroz Amarillo Yellow Rice)
I’ve mentioned previously that I love spicy food, so anything spicy or of a different cuisine that arrives in the Degustabox is usually one of the first things I try. I’ve had Santa Maria products before, but I hadn’t actually heard of these sauces and rice. I have to say, I was expecting the sauce to be spicier than it was but it still had a great taste and little kick to it. The rice went great with it too.
Nestlé Cheerios Oat Crisp
Whenever there is cereal in the Degustabox the boys are usually the first ones at it. They really enjoyed this, being a mixture of oat flakes and one of their favourite cereals anyway, Cheerios. I was also delighted to discover that 40g of these are a Healthy Extra B on Slimming World. As the name suggests, they were really crunchy and they also had quite a sweet taste.
Knorr Concentrated Stock
I use stock a lot in my everyday cooking but usually it’s made up from a stock cube. I’ve come across stock pots before but not a big bottle of concentrated stock like this. On opening it did smell really beefy and seemed like I wouldn’t need to use much, but I felt I needed to use more than a few drops to really taste it in my dishes.
Virtue Energy Water (Berries, Lemon & Lime)
I’m not a big energy drink consumer (that’s The Husband!) but I will drink them occasionally. I’ve never come across energy water before though. I did find that this just tasted like really weak squash; I felt like it needed more flavour. Still, they were both quite refreshing straight from the fridge. I did prefer the berries flavour out of the two.
Green & Black’s Velvet Edition
It’s not all that often that I buy the more premium chocolate (other than for gifts) so it was nice to see some Green & Black’s in here. Considering it was 70% cocoa, it didn’t taste as strong as I expected it to. But still, it’s not a bar that I could have eaten all in one sitting. I did use it to top this Millionaire’s shortbread though.
San Miguel Gluten Free
San Miguel is a beer that I’ve tried before, and I do drink on the odd occasion. I didn’t think to try it with the Santa Maria products but I think it would have gone really well. Being gluten free, it didn’t taste any different to the regular San Miguel that we all know of.
Mentos Mint Mix Sharing Pouch
Who doesn’t love Mentos?! All of us in this house do, but we usually have the fruity ones (so moreish, aren’t they?). I kept this peppermint and spearmint mix for car journeys and the kids asked for one every time we went out, so they had their seal of approval! Mine too. With a crunchy shell and a soft centre, they were a little too crunchy to get into but that’s probably because it was cold in the car overnight.
Dream Rice Quinoa
Sometimes I do buy milk alternatives to make smoothies with but I’m not sure I’d seen this one before receiving it in the Degustabox. I was a little dubious of trying this, but it tasted lovely (albeit unusual) with the cereal we also received, and I added it to a smoothie too which we all enjoyed. I didn’t try it in my coffee though, I wasn’t quite brave enough to alter the taste of that!
Wild Planet Albacore Wild Tuna Steaks
Even though the name pretty much gives it away that these are tuna steaks, I was surprised to find when I opened the tin that it was actually a steak…Doh. It looked lovely & natural, but I should have read the write up first where it said please don’t drain, and to mix the juices into the tuna…oops. Nevertheless, we had it mixed with pasta and it tasted really rich. I’m sure it would have been even nicer with the juices!
Seriously Spreadable Squares
I am a fan of Seriously Spreadable in general, but I do like spreadable cheese squares as I can limit myself a bit more, rather than just eating it straight from the tub! These squares had the same great taste I expected from Seriously Spreadable, but were just the right size for spreading on toast, or for the boys to have with their lunch.
Green’s Egg Custard Mix
I have to admit, I’m not really a fan of egg custards; I always find them just too eggy for a sweet dish. This mix was really easy to make, and I just poured it into a ready made pastry case. Considering I don’t like egg custards all that much, I quite liked this. It tasted more creamy than eggy. I will definitely consider this again to make my own rather than buying them ready made, as The Husband does love them and is always asking me to buy them!
Miso Tasty Ramen Noodle Kit
I have heard of ramen noodles before but I’ve never actually tried them. They are something I’ve been meaning to try though, so I was eager to have this for lunch one day. They were really easy to make; with the noodles, seasoning, and miso paste included in the kit. I added cooked chicken and mushrooms to mine, and thought they were really tasty.
