It’s that time of the year again – yes, Great British Bake Off is back! Albeit a little later than usual (sad face). I am of course joining with the #GBBOBloggers2016 bake along again, and I’ll try to join in as many weeks as possible! I have decided I am going to attempt a few more technical challenges this year, and also be a bit more organised.
It started off well with baking on Monday before the show even aired, then I watched it and decided I would attempt the technical instead (so my original bake will be in a future post!). I love jaffa cakes; I could easily eat a whole pack in one sitting. To be fair, I think they looked quite easy. My famous last words, it seems…
I had a quick google and Mary Berry’s recipe appeared so thought I would just stick with that one. I used jelly crystals and milk chocolate instead though, as that’s what I had in.
So – the cake. A small amount and easy to make. Only I’m sure mine shrank when I removed them from the oven. A 5cm cutter for the jelly was too big, so I had to cut the jelly by hand as I didn’t have a smaller one, therefore the circles are actually hexagons!
And the chocolate. Oh, the chocolate… It started off okay, and as you can see, the top ones look quite pretty and I managed to get the a pattern on them. But after the first three or so, I gave up as the chocolate just kept sliding off the jelly!
They do taste good! But I think I will just buy them in future…

You know I had exactly the same issue with the size of the jelly discs finding that the 5cm biscuit cutter would have taken the jelly disc to the edge of the sponge rather than being smaller than the sponge so i too ended up cutting them a little smaller too. They look great Stacey, but I think I have to agree that I’ll still buy shop bought ones in future.

So glad it wasn’t just me! Well, kind of lol
I had exactly the same problem. My jelly discs were too big and the chocolate kept sliding off when I tried to decorate it. I think it needs to be really cool so it doesn’t melt the jelly. I probably wouldn’t bother again but my family have requested more!
Ahh no! But the problem is, the cooler it is, then it’s harder to spread isn’t it?!
Ha Ha at least you had a go and they look great. I decided they were much too much of a faff to try making so opted for the easier drizzle cake this week.
Stacey these jaffa cakes look really good – i think Paul and Mary would have rated you highly if you had baked these last week on the show. seems the jelly cutting has been an issue for a few people, in fact jelly period! however, despite your comments about the jelly and the chocolate i would still happily scoff lots 🙂
thank you for joining in #GBBOBloggers2016 xx
Hehe thanks Jenny! 😀
I have to say that I’m with you on just buying them. They’re so cheap these days I don’t think I’d have the patience to go through it all when I know I can grab a box for less than a quid!
They do look very nice though, the sponge especially looks very inviting 🙂
I’m sure the milk chocolate made them very moreish even if they tried to get the better of you 🙂
What a cool idea to bake all the bakes. I thought the sponge looked alright to do but the chocolate would be the hard part – the ones on the top look very professional.
I think they look very good Stacey, the pattern on top is nice and they all look uniform too (talking in a Mary Bery voice here!)
Ooo yummy! These are deffo the sort of thing that I’d love to try to bake once 🙂
How much water did you add to the jelly sachet? I only have the powdered stuff in and want to give them a go but concerned about what the consistency of the jelly should? Thanks
I just used a much as the recipe stated and obviously you don’t end up with much, but it sets very firmly 🙂
