"Summer" written out in scrabble letters in front of black sunglasses on the sand; 3 Ways to Keep Your Home Cool in the SummerImage Credit

According to the UK Met Office, 2021 is likely to be the seventh successive year to record increased temperatures. It further forecasts that heat levels will range between 0.91°C and 1.15°C above expected averages. Although heat is required for many activities, it’s uncomfortable when people have to endure it without relief (even temporarily). What options do you have at your disposal this summer? Below are three ways to keep your home cooler even in the summer heat.

Use cotton or Tencel sheets for your bedding

Did you know that materials such as silk, satin, velvet, and nylon retain heat and are not suitable for summer use? They add a touch of elegance to your bedding, but it’s advisable to choose comfort over sophistication, especially in the summer. During the warm season, your best option is cotton sheet beddings, as cotton naturally has moisture-wicking properties and tends to remain cool at all times. Moreover, because it’s more breathable, people feel more comfortable using them for summer nights.

As a tip, always go in for light coloured cotton sheets. These are not heavily pigmented and therefore expel heat better. Another fabric that comes close to cotton is Tencel, made from cellulose fibres sourced from raw wood. When combined with cotton, it produces a wrinkle-free resistance with a silky feel. Despite the silky appearance the blend creates, it enhances its bed cooling properties.

Fix air conditioners and keep them well-maintained

The air conditioner to this day remains one of the most effective appliances for expelling heat and keeping the room very cool. It works by drawing warm air away from the room into an internal condenser. The now processed cooler air is circulated via the vents to keep you comfortable.

A functional and well-maintained air conditioner can last for years and give you value for money. On the contrary, a poorly maintained one has the potential to drain power and increase your home’s monthly bills. If you’re thinking about an AC installation or servicing, find out more about companies you can trust to set you up.

Keep your curtains and blinds closed

The first instinct after enduring a frosty winter is to let the sun stream through the windows. As tempting as that may be during the summer, resist the allure since summer heat lingers indoors more than you’d have imagined. Heat tends to rise to the ceiling and will remain there until the room cools down. More so, if your home is a storey building, hot air will rise and find its way to the rooms upstairs. Therefore, as a solution, keep your curtains or blinds closed in rooms you spend more time in.

Besides keeping windows and blinds closed, others go further to block the sun’s rays by fixing aluminium foil on windows. The trick to using this sun blocker is to attach each piece with the shiny part facing out to dispel rays. On the other hand, wrongly attaching the foil in reverse will rather turn your interior into a greenhouse.

As predicted by the UK Met Office, summer is going to be slightly hotter this year than what was experienced last year. Get your home ready by taking the necessary steps to remain comfortable when indoors.
