No matter what the season – spring, summer, autumn or winter – someone in our household always has a cold. It’s usually me, I think I have a weak immune system. The feeling of having a blocked nose is awful [majorly annoying] for me, never mind for babies who can’t really communicate and need their nose to breathe through.

I was recently invited to test out Sterimar. Sterimar is a natural sea water nasal spray which can be used to provide relief from and help to clear up congestion, colds, allergies, rhinitis, sinusitis and rhino-pharyngitis. We tested two of the products in the range – Sterimar Baby & Sterimar congestion relief. The only ingredient in the baby version (suitable from birth to 3 years old) is clean natural sea water from Brittany, with copper salt and manganese salt added in the adult version (which can actually be used from 3 years old).

Each version contains 150 sprays so will last quite a while. Sterimar baby can be used as often as required, whilst the congestion relief can be used 2-6 times a day.

To use Sterimar you simply:

  • prime the spray by briefly pressing the nozzle
  • insert the nozzle into the nostril (for babies you must lay them down on one side or sit up with their head tilted to one side)
  • press the nozzle briefly and let any excess solution run out of the nose, before wiping
  • repeat in the other nostril.
I really like the fact that Stermiar is a natural cold relief product, especially the baby version as people often don’t want to use artificial remedies on such young children. I found that after using the spray, it did clear our noses for a few hours afterwards so provided relief for a while but it would be runny again the next day. It is a bit of a shock when you first spray it as it does come out with a little force, and N wasn’t too keen at first. I will continue to use it though as soon as I see a cold or congestion arriving, as hopefully it would fight it off before it gets too bad.

Sterimar can be bought from Boots, Lloyds Pharmacy, independent pharmacies and most supermarket pharmacies. Sterimar congestion relief (50ml) and Sterimar baby (50ml) retails for around £4.49 RRP.
