Music As Therapy Meme

I’ve been tagged by Bumps 2 Babies to take part in Mammywoo’s Music as Therapy Meme

I’m not totally sure how I’m meant to do this as I’ve seen it done in a few different ways, so I will do it this way. I have to choose:

  • 3 beautiful songs
  • 3 different bands
  • 3 sets of lyrics that touch me in any way I want to show.
I have a VERY wide taste in music, I will bop along to anything from Steps (!) *awaits rotten tomatoes to be thrown at me*, Westlife *awaits the tomatoes again*, Bon Jovi, Take That, Linkin’ Park, pretty much everything! There isn’t much music I don’t like really.

Music has never really been ‘therapy’ for me, although when I was at school I pretty much always used to have my portable CD player (!) with me! One very vivid memory I used to have is listening to Blazin’ Squad’s ‘In The Beginning’ album nearly every day on our lunch break, I was a little obsessed! My friends didn’t hear a peep out of me! Well, apart from me singing along… The first song I remember buying is Mr Blobby on cassette, out of my pocket money, oh how that makes me laugh now!

I don’t listen to music much nowadays, I’m more of a book worm. Maybe this post will encourage me to listen a bit more, and give me some kind of therapy from it.

Most of these songs will probably be more well known songs, I’m not one to go searching out new music unless recommended to me, so have gone on what I know. I thought this was going to be hard, but it was actually easier than I thought.

3 beautiful songs

1. This was our first dance song at our wedding, the words just mean so much, and I believe that as long as we have each other, we can take on and rule the world. The song could also be applied to anyone who has lost a loved one, and believes they are shining down on them.

Take That – Rule The World

2. This song has no meaning in particular for me personally, but I think it is an absolutely beautiful song as brings a tear to my eye every time I hear it. I think this is partly because in the video the singer cries too, and it just makes me feel all emotional.

Sinead O’Connor – Nothing Compares 2 U

3. This song I absolutely love. Not long after we met, my (now) husband sang it on karaoke, he did an amazing job and now on the rare occasion we go somewhere with karaoke, I always encourage him to sing it.

Robbie Williams – Angels

3 different bands

1. I love this band. Have seen them in concert and it was absolutely amazing. I was brought up on their music, that’s probably why I love them so much. (And the lead singer just makes me swoon!) Was really hard to choose a song by them, but this is one of my favourites.

Bon Jovi – Always

2. Not exactly a band, but a singer whose music I was also brought up on and used to sing along to in my Mum’s car. I have a reason for choosing this song actually – when I was little, I always used to think she sang ‘Park Ranger’! Looking back now I always have a giggle when I hear it, and sometimes still replace the proper lyric!

Dionne Warwick – Heartbreaker

3. I have to include this band as this is where the name of my blog came from, the particular lyric I chose just stood out for me throughout our journey, and anybody else who has been through/is going through the same thing I’m sure would agree, as you are always led to believe just how easy it is, when in reality it isn’t for a lot of people.

Coldplay – The Scientist

3 sets of lyrics that touch me in any way I want to show

1. When I was at school, in my last couple of years I was bullied. I wasn’t the ‘prettiest’ girl in the school, or my year, in fact I was probably more made to believe I was one of the ugliest. This song helped me through that period and now when I listen to it, I believe that I am beautiful, in my own way.

Christina Aguilera – Beautiful

Don’t look at me

Everyday is so wonderful
Then suddenly
It’s hard to breathe
Now and then I get insecure
From all the pain
I’m so ashamed

I am beautiful
No matter what they say
Words can’t bring me down
I am beautiful
In every single way
Yes words can’t bring me down
Oh no
So don’t you bring me down today

To all your friends you’re delirious
So consumed
In all your doom, ooh
Trying hard to fill the emptiness
The pieces gone
Left the puzzle undone
Ain’t that the way it is

You’re beautiful
No matter what they say
Words can’t bring you down
Oh no
You’re beautiful
In every single way
Yes words can’t bring you down
Oh no
So don’t you bring me down today

No matter what we do
(No matter what we do)
No matter what we say
(No matter what we say)
We’re the song inside the tune
(Yeah, oh yeah)
Full of beautiful mistakes

And everywhere we go
(And everywhere we go)
The sun will always shine
(The sun will always, always, shine)
And tomorrow we might awake
On the other side

We’re beautiful
No matter what they say
Yes words won’t bring us down
Oh no
We are beautiful
In every single way
Yes words can’t bring us down
Oh no
So don’t you bring me down today

Oh, oh
Don’t you bring me down today
Don’t you bring me down, ooh
Today

2. This song was played at my Uncle’s funeral, and now every time I hear it, it brings a tear to my eye, as it rings so true that the person who has passed could actually be singing these lyrics.

Norman Greenbaum – Spirit In The Sky

When I die and they lay me to rest
Gonna go to the place that’s the best
When I lay me down to die
Goin’ up to the spirit in the sky
Goin’ up to the spirit in the sky
That’s where I’m gonna go when I die
When I die and they lay me to rest
Gonna go to the place that’s the best

Prepare yourself you know it’s a must
Gotta have a friend in Jesus
So you know that when you die
He’s gonna recommend you
To the spirit in the sky
Gonna recommend you
To the spirit in the sky
That’s where you’re gonna go when you die
When you die and they lay you to rest
You’re gonna go to the place that’s the best

Never been a sinner I never sinned
I got a friend in Jesus
So you know that when I die
He’s gonna set me up with
The spirit in the sky
Oh set me up with the spirit in the sky
That’s where I’m gonna go when I die
When I die and they lay me to rest
I’m gonna go to the place that’s the best
Go to the place that’s the best

3. This song I came across on another blog earlier in the year, and I listened to it over & over again when we struggling. Someone commented that it was a ‘morbid’ song and would make me feel worse, but in truth, it actually made me feel better, to know that there were other people out there feeling exactly them same way as me.

Kellie Coffey – I Would Die For That

Jenny was my best friend.
Went away one summer.
Came back with a secret
She just couldn’t keep.
A child inside her,
Was just too much for her
So she cried herself to sleep.

And she made a decision
Some find hard to accept.
To young to know that one day
She might live to regret.

But I would die for that.
Just to have one chance
To hold in my hands
All that she had.
I would die for that.

I’ve been given so much,
A husband that I love.
So why do I feel incomplete?
With every test and checkup
We’re told not to give up.
He wonders if it’s him.
And I wonder if it’s me.

All I want is a family,
Like everyone else I see.
And I won’t understand it
If it’s not meant to be.

Cause I would die for that.
Just to have one chance
To hold in my hands
All that they have.
I would die for that.

And I want to know what it’s like
To bring a dream to life.
For that kind of love,
What I’d give up!
I would die for that.

Sometimes it’s hard to conceive,
With all that I’ve got,
And all I’ve achieved,
What I want most
Before my time is gone,
Is to hear the words
“I love you, Mom.”

I would die for that.
Just to have once chance
To hold in my hands
What so many have
I would die for that.

And I want to know what it’s like
To bring a dream to life.
How I would love
What some give up.
I would die …
I would die for that.

I’m going to tag Dreams can come true. But anybody else who wants to have a go, feel free to do so and link back to me!
